About the Japanese Yen

It is the third most traded currency in the foreign exchange market, only after
the US dollar and the Euro. The foreign currency that is most traded against the
Yen is the Euro. Convert JPY to EUR now.
Japanese Yen History
The Yen was introduced in 1871. The Bank of Japan was established in 1882 and was
charged with the monopoly on controlling the money supply. Prior to the Yen, each
of Japan's feudal fiefs issued their own currency. After World War II, the Yen lost
much of its value. As such, in 1971 the Yen was pegged to the US Dollar at a rate
of 308 JPY to 1 USD. By 1973, it returned to free floating status trading on world
currency markets.
